My name is Morgan Beckwith and I am a painter. I received my BFA in paining in 2012 from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. I trained in oil, but starting a small farm and having my daughter prompted me to reinvent my approach and employ gouache, colored pencil, and crayon.
I make mostly smaller portraits of little objects that I cherish in those in-between moments... the tomatoes that look so perfect in the afternoon light, the fresh apple blossoms that will fade in their first storm. I love these treasures our home offers up for us to enjoy. These moments are like glistening sprinkles on a cupcake, the closer you look the more you see.
I love paint. I always have. I love the way it looks on your palette. Is it a tool or is it a snack... so creamy in texture, its color gleaming and clean. I enjoy making work that lends itself to being reconstructed and re-imagined in paint. Painting is a little magic trick played on us all with bits of color and shapes beside one another. I prefer painting the things that are fit to be made of such miraculous and charming materials. Painting for me is a way to savor a moment, an afternoon in the garden, a way to look back and remember the sound of geese in the yard, goats grazing fall grass, my daughter collecting rocks and sharing tomatoes with the dogs. Painting is a way of cataloging the feeling of times in my life I want to never forget.
